Why It's Required

Registering a car in Korea requires certification under the Clean Air Conservation Act and the Noise and Vibration Control Act. Private imports are not exempt.

If the same model and year has already been certified, that data can be reused, cutting the cost significantly.

Without a precedent, the car has to be tested from scratch — and the cost multiplies.

So which car you choose is what really sets the certification fee. The rarer it is, the more it costs.

What to Check Beforehand

The VIN identifies the exact engine type. Even the same model needs separate certification if the engine differs.

The applicable standard depends on the model year. Older cars can sometimes actually have the advantage.

Modifications may need to be reverted to stock. Exhausts and ECUs are the usual culprits.

Timeline

With a precedent, it takes weeks; without one, much longer. This is the stretch where the car sits after the ship arrives but before you can drive it.
